Gallinago megala
Essentially indistinguishable from the Japanese Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) in the field. However recent research indicates that Chinese Snipe overwinter in PNG while Japanese Snipe are very rare passage migrants. Based on the date (December is too late for a passage migrant) this can be ID'd with reasonable certainty as a Chinese Snipe.
Grassy margins of a small lake on the Pacific Adventist University campus outside Port Moresby.
Breeds mainly in central and southern Siberia and Mongolia. Entire population migrates and spends non-breeding season principally in eastern and southern India, Sri Lanka, south-eastern China, South-East Asia and New Guinea.
