Northern Mockingbird (juvenile)

Mimus polyglottos

Description:

This bluejay-sized bird looks like a mockingbird but is not as rounded as the ones I usually see. Also, it stayed on the ground beneath a bird feeder for a long time unlike the typical mockingbirds here. It turns out to be a juvenile specimen of Northern mockingbird.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton, FL

Notes:

The photo was taken through patio screening so is not too clear.

It's been a long time since I lived in Mockingbird territory(although if I stay here another ten, they may become an Oregon bird), but a pair used to raise a brood every year in our yucca tree in California
