Mamey Colorado

Pouteria sapota

Habitat:

original of Mexico and Central America, cultivated in most of tropical Americas the Caribbean, and South Florida.

Notes:

Another favorite backyard fruit tree here in Miami. Makes a delicious milkshake. The large glossy dark brown pit (seed) we used to use as toys in Cuba to play this game simulating rooster fights. Each person's seed was their "rooster". One person would place the seed on the ground, and the other player would throw his seed at it. The person whose seed cracked first was the looser. The inside of the seed "pod" is white and has a strong perfume, to me it always reminds me of the smell of those white pucks they put in urinals for disinfecting. Note in pic 3 how the small flowers grow right up against the branches.
