Virginia Ctenuchid Moth

Ctenucha virginica

Habitat:

The caterpillers can be found in wet meadows, lawns and other grassy areas where they feed mostly on grasses. Adult moths fly readily in the daytime and are also attracted to lights at night.

Notes:

This is a caterpiller of the Virginia Ctenuchid Moth. I have seen a variety of different looking caterpillers on the web identified as Virginia Ctehuchid moth caterpillars, but as near as I can tell, this one is correctly identified. They seem to come in two color phases. One has white and yellow hairs and the other has black and yellow hairs as you see that this one does. It appears that they can change from one color phase to the other when they molt.
