White-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta carolinensis

Description:

What I believe to be a male, White-breasted Nuthatch

Habitat:

On a stump in our yard, next to a (frozen) lake but within 5 miles of wetlands, farmlands and woods.

Notes:

The White-breasted Nuthatches are frequent visitors at our bird feeders seeming to prefer eating off the ground at hanging suet feeders, platform feeders and on raised stumps, though I do occasionally see them on the ground. This one has a Black-oil Sunflower seed in its mouth but in the past when I put out unsalted, roasted peanuts in our yard during the winter months they really seemed to enjoy them.
