A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Patagioenas leucocephala
A resident of islands and coastlines in the Caribbean, the White-crowned Pigeon reaches the northern limits of its range in south Florida. Nests in coastal and island forests, including mangroves, and feeds in forests with a wide variety of fruit-bearing trees.
"The White-crowned Pigeon is threatened throughout its range. Now protected in Florida..." -from reference site. This spotting in Miami is, I believe, at their nethermost range. I was also surprise to see one last weekend at another local park in a wooded area. I wonder if the species is beginning to range further north if they are experiencing habitat and hunting pressures in the Caribbean.
