Black Phoebe

Sayornis nigricans

Description:

Small flycatcher.
Small crest on it's head the bird is mostly black except for belly and undertail coverts. Small eyes, pointed black bill and black legs. Eats mostly insects, some berries, it has been observed in diving for minnows. Not too shy. Sometimes it seems to look like it's observing us.

Habitat:

Found in open areas, backyards, parks, near buildings but usually near water.

Notes:

I have spotted these guys or should I say they spot me. Observed them bouncing around chasing flying insects but not far from where I will stand. They don't tend to be too shy but they do just stay out of reach. Spotted this one near a lake in Walnut Creek and earlier spotted one in Orinda also by a lake.
