Great Purple Hairstreak Butterfly

Atlides halesus

Description:

Hindwing with one short and one long tail. Abdomen is blue on top, red-orange beneath. Upperside black with wide-spread iridescent blue. Underside black with iridescent gold markings near tails.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat garden. Brilliant iridescent blue as it flew.

Notes:

I usually do not see these until April. Wonderful reward for being out doing the winter pruning and weeding.
