White-tailed deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

The white-tailed deer is a very common deer in the United States and is a favorite of hunters. I identified this deer as a white-tailed deer because the underside of its tail is white. However, this deer that I've spotted seems smaller in size, has a fuller face and appears to have a bib down the front than the deer I'm used to seeing in Maryland. There are several subspecies of white-tailed deer and this may be one of them.

Habitat:

This deer was spotted on the edge of the woods at Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, Louisiana.
