Fragrant orchid

Gymnadenia conopsea

Description:

This is flowering herbaceous plant belonging to family Orchidaceae. They are terrestrial orchids, buds surviving the winter in underground bulbs or tubers. In May, when we observed them, these orchids were literally everywhere in alpine pastures we visited. The height of flower stems was between 20cm and 70; and they ranged in color from pale pink to purple-pink. They produce inflorescences up to 15cm in length, most often densely packed with small hermaphrodite flowers. Flowers are typical and easily recognized as Orchids, having an extremely long spurs.

Habitat:

Observed mid June in great numbers on alpine pastures in Jura Natural reserve (Crozet). These small flowers were literally everywhere.

Notes:

This was one of our first tries in "going in Orchids" collecting some of photos of members of this beautiful family... So, my son and I, we had a lot of difficulties identifying our spoils - please feel free to correct us...
