Gold Dust Lichen

Chrysothrix candelaris

Description:

This brilliant yellow crustose lichen can cover large patches of rock. This is a lichen that can be seen from far away.

Habitat:

Spotted on protected rock faces on Kennesaw Mountain

Notes:

When I first saw this, I thought the Dept of Trans or the park service had marked some rocks near the road - it has the same dayglow properties of some road paint; then I saw it in some places that made no sense for a road crew to mark and I thought maybe it was vandalism. Closer inspection showed it was a lichen.
