Larus pacificus
A large gull with black back a robust yellow bill, sometimes tipped with red. The wings are wholly black with a thin white trailing edge. The tail is white with a wide black band. The legs are yellow. Immature birds have dark brown wings and cream mottled body with a yellow bill.
Coastal to the southern half of Australia, Macquarie Island, some other islands within Australasia.
Handsome often solitary gulls but also regularly seen with other gull species.

Thanks arlanda. It's interesting comparing this bird to Laura's kelp gull from the Falklands. They both appear here and people have a hard time telling the difference. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/175...
