Meadow Fritillary

Melitaea parthenoides

Description:

Of some 5-6 cm in wingspan, this is a deeply orange butterfly with white borders and heavy black pattern on wings. I'm not absolutely sure about the ID, for me it's always messy when it comes to IDing fritillaries. In particular, I was unsure about the pic N°4: that there is not the same individual, this one was found on adjacent meadow, and I did not get a pic from above. But, from the underside, the hind underwings are not identical with pics of this species I found on Internet for comparison.

Habitat:

Found on montane dry meadow, on forest margin. This meadow was in an agricultural area of Bugey, eastern France, a region of green rolling hills covered by mixed forests, meadows and pastures.
