Crawdad hole

Cambaridae

Description:

Crawdads are also known as crayfish or crawfish or mudbugs. They are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters. I have learned that they come out at night and are rarely seen above ground during the day. They make this unique small mound out of dirt that has a two-inch hole at the top.

Habitat:

While riding my bike around High Island, Texas, I noticed there were lots and lots of little tiny mountains sticking out of the ground filled with little mounds of dried mud and each mound had about a 2-inch hole at the top. I asked one of the residents what they were because I had never seen anything like it and he said it was some type of crawfish hole. I have since looked it up on internet and just had to take a picture of one. These crawdad holes seem to be everywhere--in field and lawns. Did not see any crawfish crawling out.

Thank you Ava T-B for suggesting I put the crawdad hole in Animal Architecture. These little creatures do amazing things and building their nest is truly an architecture marvel. Thanks again.
