Description:

Large duck, male has dark bill, black breast, white body, red eye, and a rust colored head. Female has black bill, brown body, and sometimes a slight pale eye stripe.

Habitat:

Marsh/wetlands.

Notes:

This bird was completely surrounded by sanderlings.

I can't really tell from the photo what this is, but it doesn't look like a female Canvasback. The bird's back looks far too dark for a female CANV and the shape of the forehead/sloping bill isn't right either
