Golden Silk Spider

Nephila clavipes

Description:

Large spider with distinctive rectangular concave abdomen, which is beautiful yellow-brown covered in white spots with a yellowish-white edge. Very long legs and a single black spot in the middle of an otherwise white cephalothorax. Builds impressive webs -- this one was about 2 meters in diameter.

Habitat:

Widespread in southern USA through central South America. This one was in the Upper Amazon Peruvian rainforest. Builds webs across open areas, such as the above which was between the branches of a tree fallen into the Maranon River.
