Cyclopsitta gulielmitertii
Small fig parrot at 11-13cm. Several sub species that differ slightly in colouration. This one is Cyclopsitta g. fuscifrons from southern PNG lowlands. Essentially green with black forehead and cheek patch, white face and throat with strong orange band across the upper breast. Primaries are blue, bill and eyes are black. Females similar but with more orange on the face and a yellow breast band. (See last image.)
Found in lowland and foothill forest. Usually in small groups feeding on forest figs and palm fruits. These birds seen in the Ketu Creek area of the Fly River in PNG southern lowlands.
Quite a complicated group here. This species is split into 3 main groups which between them have 4 sub species currently recognized. These birds are part of the melanogenia group that have black foreheads. This is important because the other common name for the species as a whole is Blue-fronted Fig Parrot which of course this particular sub sp. doesnt have.
