Description:

Deciduous prickly shrub native to South Texas. Blooms during the spring migration of hummingbirds with long red spines growing from a stem.

Habitat:

This plant was found near a pond and was surrounded by grasses, cattails, wild flowers and oak trees.

Notes:

Colerful red seeds in the fall are poisonus and not eaten by wildlife.
