Lephodytes cucullatus
Hooded Mergansers on Berlin Pond in December (Vermont) is hard to believe. Usually the ponds are iced over. What to look for: narrow, dark bill, male with white breast and black edge, white crest; female with tawny crest and gray breast. Third image is cute showing Mallards dabbling for fish in the background.
Ponds, lakes, coast in winter except December of this year.
