Description:

It is excatly 2 cm long.

Habitat:

Found underneath a cement stepping stone

Notes:

The only foliage with in 15-20 meters is grass so most likely food source was turf grass.

It is my understanding that a cocoon (moth) is a pupal casing that is usually spun by the caterpillar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Actias... .
A butterfly pupa is a chrysalis and is the specialized skin layer of the final instar of the caterpillar. http://bugguide.net/node/view/12024/bgim... Yours is a chrysalis.

They come in both colors, green or brown

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think A. sordida is likely.

Looks like Chrysalis of Apatura sordida (Family; Nymphalidae)
