Small Caltrops

Tribulus terrestris

Description:

The tiny fruit of this plant can be extremely painful if you tread on them. They are a pain here where they get picked up by shoe soles while out walking then fall out unnoticed at home and get trodden on by bare feet!

Habitat:

Limestone outcrop in foothills of los Serranos mountains.

Notes:

My Mediterranean plant book gives this the common name of Maltese Cross but that same name is more commonly used for Lychnis chalcedonica which is not listed in the book.
