American alligator

alligator mississippiensi

Description:

I enjoy walking the marsh trails in the mornings at St Marks Refuge. One morning I heard this very deep throat rumbling coming from the waters. The noise was coming from several different places. The sound was the American alligators talking to each other. Wow! Had never heard a sound like that before. It was quite vibrant and loud. One gator actually rose his head up from the water to give out his throat rumbling (scared me and picture 3 is fuzzy because of it). Thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Habitat:

St Marks National Wildlife Refuge, St Marks, Florida
