Common Pauraque

Nyctidromus albicollis

Description:

Mottled brown and gray bird, extremely good at blending in. A volunteer on the site asked me if I wanted to see a pauraque, which of course I did, so he came and pointed this guy out. Of course it took me awhile to see it because it looks like everything it's sleeping in, but the guy had been on site for 3 months and said this bird always slept in the same 10 square foot area, it was just a matter of finding him within that small area. It was hard to get good photos since the brush was thick, but I was just happy to see one during the day!

Habitat:

Sitting on the ground in thorn scrub area.
