Podilymbus podiceps
The Pied-billed Grebes in most of North America are resident birds. Small Grebes that dive for food. Mostly brown with a very short to no tail. Bill is gray with dark ring around. Also a light eyering. This one is an immature one that has a striped face that will eventually change.
They will spend most of their lives on the water. Rarely ever seen flying. Can swim under water for a long distance. When it senses danger they will actually sink straight down.
Maybe seen in ponds, lakes, and bays.
