Hooded Merganser

Lophodytes cucullatus

Description:

This immature male has a gray body and brown, hooded head.

Habitat:

At a tiny pond by himself at the park in town. I think he didn't get the "it's time to migrate" message since all the other winter ducks are gone!

That is a good tip. I must have seen these and mistook them for females. But then i always saw them in a pair of male and female.

Yes very similar, but the female would have a dark eye.
