A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Catharus fuscescens
Small brown bird with a white breast marbled with brown streaks.
Sidewalk outside of the St. Louis Zoo.
This Veery was obviously very sick and about to die. It wasn't paying any attention to the crowds of people walking by. There was nothing we could do for it, but I promised my daughters that I would photograph it to remember this sweet little bird.

I completely understand! Thanks for sharing.
Great idea ForestDragon. We did look for someone at the zoo, but no one was interested of course. We were on vacation and leaving later that day or I would have searched farther.
Poor little thrush.
I would agree that this bird certainly doesn't look well at all. For future encounters with injured/ill appearing wildlife, another option could be to find a local wildlife rehabilitator. Often, if the bird is very ill, they won't make it, but sometimes, say, the bird hit a window and became stunned, they can recover and be released. Many to most rehabbers will do their best to recover the wildlife even sick ones, and they would have a better idea of which ones are too sick to recover.
You can try doing a web search for local wildlife rehabilitators in your area. It's a great resource to have!
