Masked Lapwing

Vanellus miles

Description:

Chick with long black legs, white chest and black marking over the eye. Mum and dad long red legged bird. Yellow head and yellow waddle under chin. Black patch on top of head. Grey coat with white chest. Round black eyes.

Habitat:

Garden near Johnstone River, Innisfail, Queensland, Australia.

Notes:

I saw a tiny chick sticking out of a cut grassy patch and when I wanted to take a closer look to take some pictures both parents started to attack me. Flying very close over my head, screaming and just at the last moment soaring away from me! I quickly backed up back into the car and mum found the little chick again. She walked away from mum and separated herself by walking into a walled garden and mum walked via the outside. Turned out dad was around looking for another chick somewhere completely different. The little chick that walked into the garden came out at the back fence and walked on its own along the riverbank where she connected with her other little sister/ brother. In the meantime chick number three was found and the family was together again.
