Melanerpes carolinus
maura.p.powers is correct. Red-bellied Woodpecker (male)...the male has red on the top of the head and nape of the neck, where the female only has the red on the nape of the neck ...http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-bellied_Woodpecker/id
Looks like a Red-bellied to me. He only has the red hood, and his back is barred black and white, lacking the prominent pied colour of the red head. North American Woodpeckers are so tough to ID because they're all red, black, and white! ;-)
