False Crocus or Crocus Geometer Moth

Xanthotype sp.

Description:

Family: Geometridae, Subfamily: Ennominae (Typical Geometer Moth). TL: 30-40 mm. Wingspan: 50 mm (approximately). Bright yellow wings with variable speckled and blotched purplish brown. PM line is sometimes a complete band in False Crocus. Hosts: Deciduous trees and shrubs and low plants.

Habitat:

Woodlands (open) or meadow near woods where I have found one before this year. Will come to porch light.

Notes:

Very difficult to determine between False Crocus Geometer (Xanthotype urticaria) and Crocus Geometer (Xanthotype sospeta) I have seen these last year too. This is a beauty!
