Burrito Moth

Datana sp.

Description:

Large hairy moth with a bright patch of red hair on the head. The forewings were banded in tans and browns, the underwings were pale brown with a slightly darker apical band. 4 cm long. Family Notodontidae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Many species of Datana are indistinguishable as adults, and are a little less difficult to identify as larvae.
