Great Blue Skimmer

Libellula vibrans

Description:

Bar-winged Skimmers (L. axilena) also have a narrow black stripe along the leading edge of the wing between the nodus and pterostigma. I'm pretty confident this is a Great Blue Skimmer.

Habitat:

Mixed forest near wetlands.

That's ok! I wasn't 100% sure which is why I didn't make an official suggestion. Glad you were able to get an answer! L. vibrans was my other thought. They are quite similar and I am not as good with my dragonflies! Stunning capture, none the less. :-).

Thanks for the link ForestDragon. I contacted Jim Johnson (President of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas), and he supplied the information I listed in the description. Unfortunately, I don't have any other shots from this day, but I went back and got a shot of another (or possibly the same one) that I'm uploading now.

Do you have any other views of this dragonfly? I believe this is a Bar-winged Skimmer (Libellula axilena). http://bugguide.net/node/view/4090
