Gila Woodpecker - female

Melanerpes uropygialis

Description:

Back and rump barred black and white, central tail feathers barred. Head and breast greyish brown.

Habitat:

Sonoran Desert - found here in Lost Dutchman State Park east of Phoenix. Many of the saguaro cacti in this park have Gila Woodpeckers nesting in them. The other ones have Gilded Flicker nesting in them! Great place to bird!

Notes:

This female was bringing various bits of food to her young in the nest cavity in this saguaro cactus. Photo #1 may be an insect or moth and photo #2 looks like a red berry. As she approached the nest cavity each time, the young would start their high pitched begging calls.
