Description:

Family: Sesiidae (Clearwing Borer Moths) Colorful diurnal moths that closely resemble bees, wasps and Scorpion flies. Comes to light. Common, Scorpion fly mimic. Length: 12 mm (.42 inches). Transparent FW has black border and discal bar. Blue-black abdomen has an orange-tipped fanned tuft at tip. Hosts: Red maple and sugar maple.

Habitat:

Woodlands, lawns where host tree is. (Range: Southeast Canada and Eastern USA)

Notes:

Bee, wasp, Scorpion fly (especially) mimic
