Rufous-eyed brook frog

Duellmanohyla rufioculis

Description:

Nocturnal tree frog. Upper part granulate to smooth with green to brown coloration. White abdomen. Distinctive red eyes. Males 25-30 mm and females 33-40 mm.

Habitat:

This species occurs on the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of the mountains of Costa Rica, at elevations of 500-1,580m. It lives in premontane wet forest and rainforest. A nocturnal stream breeder, males call throughout the year but are most active from August to December. The species sometimes aggregates around small, shallow streams or seeps draining into streams. Tadpoles are found in quiet pools. Frog Pond, exhibit, Monteverde.

Thank you Dan! I am excited because I am still by day 2 of my 19 days of stay in CR so imagine how many more spottings I have on the way! I guess you may still have many of Borneo to post as well :-)

More thank yous :-) ..I thought I would have reached this number 2K after all my CR spottings were done but in fact I am still only by day 2 out of 17 days so I now wonder if it will make me go past 2100! (Costa Rica and Central America in general are wonderful places for biodiversity of species!)

Thanks! I chose the best shot I think I have of a frog spotting because all the others being night and with bad illumination are rather blurry..I will post them too for their species but the 2000 deserved a better example haha! :-)
