Tibicen superbus
The green cicada is approximately 1.5 inches long. It is winged and flies from treed area to treed area. Although it is hard to see, the cicada has 3 eyes. The 3rd eye can be discerned between the main two. This cicada can be identified by its song. It starts ""Gar-Gar-Gar-Gar-Gar-Gar-..." at mid level, quickly increases in speed and volume, before dropping way off.
Our backyard is well landscaped with bushes and trees as can be seen in the third photo. Cicada scar the soft limbs and lay their eggs.
The best reference for this is the bugguide reference. It provides a very comprehensice classification of insects. Special thanks to ForestDragon for the identification.
