Black Caiman

Melanosuchus niger

Description:

the largest of the Amazonian crocodilians

Habitat:

amazon, lake

Notes:

We spotted this during a night time paddle around a small lake in Zacambu reserve. Our guide grabbed this caiman so we could see it better and then set it down on the side of the canoe. It hung out here for about 30 seconds before realizing it could escape and splashed back into the water.
