Cauca Guan

Penelope perspicax

Description:

Large birds, 76 cm in length, and similar in general appearance to turkeys. Endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. Estimated to be less than 1000 individuals left.

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2400m

Notes:

I spotted 2 of these huge birds in a tree along the road through Santuario Otun Quimbaya. I didn't know how rare they were at the time. I'm not great at ID'ing many birds, but I think I nailed this one.
