Castilia Crescent

Castilia castilla cf. castilla

Description:

about 2"

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2400m

Notes:

I spotted a bunch of different butterflies puddling along the road through Santuario Otun Quimbaya. At first these black ones with the red bands were very skittish and hard to photograph. I tried chasing them down but they wouldn't let me get close, so I just stood still. It didn't take too long for one of them to land on my boot and check it out for a while. The one in the photo here landed beside me while I was standing still.

Nymphalidae, Argynninae, Melitaeini, Castilla castilla and probably the subspecies Castilla castilla castilla. Similar to Castilla castilla occidentalis.
