Southern Flying Squirrel

Glaucomys volans

Description:

Small squirrel with furry skin membrane extending from front and hind legs allowing it to glide from tree to tree. Nocturnal. Large eyes, flat tail. Creamy to white underside, dark streaks along side at edge of "glider wings", light brown back and tail and slightly grayish on head.

Habitat:

Deciduous and mixed forests, relying mainly on nuts and fruits of trees, though quite opportunistic in diet including mushrooms, carrion, insects and bird eggs.
