Small Tortoiseshell - Petite tortue

Aglais urticae

Description:

The drab undersides of the Small Tortoiseshell contrast with its distinctive yellow and orange uppersides, and provide this butterfly with a good deal of camouflage, especially useful when it's hibernating.

Habitat:

Alpine meadow, a;t. 1400 m.

Notes:

Another butterfly showing strong decline in Western Europe: http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/sma... An open wing shot of another specimen found nearby can be seen at: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/590...
