Black-winged Grasshopper

Trimerotropis melanoptera

Description:

Large grasshopper, 32-50 mm in length (females larger end of that spectrum). Gray with darker bands on forewings. Hind tibia ("shin") bright orange. Abdomen of male orange. Inner side of hind femur ("thigh") black with orange band near tip. Base of hind wing is yellow, remainder of hind wing largely black.

Habitat:

Degraded shortgrass prairie: Very short grasses, weeds, scattered yucca, prickly-pear cacti, sunflowers, elm trees. Soil sandy with rocky patches.

Notes:

First two images depict a male; Third image depicts a female. This is an abundant species farther east in El Paso County where vegetation is even more sparse.
