Costus igneus

Description:

Also known as Fiery Costus or Spiral Flag or Spiral ginger. This plant has large fleshy looking and edible leaves. The undersides of these large, smooth, dark green leaves have light purple shade. The leaves are spirally arranged around the stem, forming attractive, arching clumps arising from underground rootstocks. The maximum height of these plants is about two feet

Habitat:

Native to Brazil

Notes:

It is cultivated in India for its use in traditional medicine and elsewhere as an ornamental. (Wikipedia) Eating leaves is believed to be good for lowering blood glucose levels (for treating diabetes) which explains the name 'Insulin plant'.
