Calotes calotes
A medium-sized green lizard that does not change color. But the male has color-changing (usually reddish) head portion. It is also called Green Garden Lizard.
found in Alathur, close to the Western Ghats
It had laid eggs and was covering up the hole. After it made the place as the place had looked before it dug for egg-laying, it left.
Yes I forgot to say it's an excellent spotting with nesting behaviour. Thanks for sharing this one Vincent.
Thank you, Mark Ridgway. You are right. You have done more work than me. I have edited my spotting accordingly.
A bit more searching has suggested C calotes. is a better match. http://www.indianaturewatch.net/displayi...
I think stripes individually vary but the number and placement should be consistent. The likely confusing species, Common forest lizard, Calotes calotes, has many more stripes. C nemoricola actually ranges mostly south of this so it might be 'Southern Green calotes' - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/116... Good luck with searching.
Dear Mark Ridgway, I have edited my spotting according to your suggestion. But the distinct white stripes on my specimen is so different from the photo in your reference, that I am continuing the search
