Scarlet-tipped Wasp Mimic Moth

Description:

These Wasp Mimic Moths actually resemble large flies more than wasps. They are coal black except for a bright red, furry abdomen. The wingspan is about 30 mm (1.5 in.) and appear to be a clear membrane with thin black veins running longitudinally. There are 3 species in the Genus Dinia, none of which are listed for Ecuador. This example appears to be Dinia eagrus, however I would very much appreciate correction or confirmation.

Habitat:

Dinia eagrus is found throughout most of Central America and into Northern South America and East to Brazil. This one was found outside a house in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador (700 masl).

Notes:

I have seen a few of these, always during the daytime, and they always appear very "friendly," lighting on your hands and arms. Beautiful contrast between the deep black and bright red.
