Coprinellus radians
A small solitary clump ( about 40 mm wide) of fibrous orange spikey mass on dead wood. It was difficult to prise off the timber suggesting that it was arising from within the wood. There were no definite identifiable structures in the mass, just tough fibres. On close inspection, there were more fibres erupting from underneath the bark on the log.
Spotted on a decaying eucalyptus log.
An interesting find - puzzling at first ! This is the mycelial mat, called Ozonium, which grows within the wood bark and it is produced by
Coprinellus radians, which is also called Agaricus radians and Coprinus radians. The fruiting bodies arise from this fungal mass.
Family: Psathyrellaceae
