Tarantula Hawk

Hemipepsis ustulata

Description:

Large wasp at maybe 5 cm. Black body with orange(ish) colored wings. Seemed aggressive and appeared to be guarding this section of railing.

Habitat:

Few hundred feet about the Rio Grande river on the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

Notes:

Pictures were taken with only natural light so reflections are different

Lack of any bluish reflections pretty much rules out Pepsis spp.
