Black Widow Spider

Latrodectus

Description:

The infamous black spider with the red hour glass on the back. These pictures don't do it justice. I sat for a while after this spider went into hiding behind the pink cement edging I'm using to keep dogs from digging into my backyard. I saw the red hourglass but was unable to capture it this time. The web is about 11x17 inches between the fence and the tree. So I'm sure it's a well fed spider. The web is nearly invisible.

Habitat:

Behind the cement edging in my backyard. The web is about 11x17 inches between the fence and the tree. So I'm sure it's a well fed spider. The web is nearly invisible.

Notes:

The female black widow's bite is particularly harmful to humans because of its unusually large venom glands. Latrodectus bites rarely kill human beings.
