Black crowned night Heron

Nycticorax nycticorax

Description:

Very Large bird, a striking red eye. A bright blue grey bonet, a bright blue grey back. Grey wings with a white under belly. Long legs.

Habitat:

Spotted on the very edge of fast moving rapids, fishing.

Notes:

Spotted several times in this same area, as well as northward along the trail at the turtle pond, also fishing. The largest bird I've ever seen (other than a bald eagle) The wingspan is easily more than 7th if not more. The bird stood at least 3ft tall. This picture was taken from across the creek and not the greatest of digital cameras. This image is a digital zoom of that photo. After watching for sometime I finally witnessed it catch a fish and swollow it whole in one quick gulp.
