Persian buttercup

Ranunculus asiaticus

Description:

These delicate Persian buttercups were spotted in a nearby greenhouse. A garden favorite, they are mostly grown in greenhouses in my area as they won't quite make it through freezing winter temperatures.

Habitat:

Native to the Mediterranean and northeastern Africa

Notes:

Flowers come in pink, red, yellow and white; leaves and stems are hairy.

This is fairly typical of how we select something that is pleasing to our eyes but next to useless to the bugs that would usually benefit from it. Like SO many garden cultivars the freakish mutated multiple petals restrict access to pollinators. Take a look at the simple beauty of the true species: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ranunc...

A monster!
