Dendrocopos major
Great spotted woodpecker scanning a dead tree looking for insects to eat. 23–26 centimetres long with a 38–44 centimetres wingspan. Easy to identify because of the black and white shoulders with red undertail coverts. Males have a crimson spot on the nape but this is not the case.
Open oak forest (Quercus pyrenaica). Reserva de la Biosfera del Real Sitio de San Ildefons-El Espinar.
